More admirals than warships? The absurd reality of the Royal Navy in 2025 (Video)

British PM Keir Starmer may be rattling his sabres at Russia, but has he any sabres to rattle?

Historian and writer Dr. Mark Felton highlights the staggering decline of the Royal Navy, revealing a bizarre imbalance in leadership.

While the fleet has shrunk to just 25 combat-ready warships, the number of admirals remains disproportionately high, with 40 serving officers at the rank of rear admiral or above—almost double the number of actual warships.

This means there is one admiral for every 805 sailors, a stark contrast to World War II, when 53 admirals oversaw a navy of 1,400 vessels and 200,000 personnel.

Felton critiques government defense cuts that have left Britain’s naval force a hollowed-out version of its former self, questioning whether such an inflated number of high-ranking officers is justifiable given the Royal Navy’s diminished size and woeful capacity.

Adding to the controversy, he uncovers financial arrangements in which the Royal Navy pays fees to Prince William’s Duchy of Cornwall for the use of its own bases and facilities, raising further concerns about defense spending priorities.
