Chinese drug lord Zhi Dong Zhang, known as “Brother Wang,” has been extradited to the U.S. after a dramatic international chase involving Mexico, Cuba, and Russia.
Accused of masterminding a vast fentanyl trafficking and money laundering network linking Chinese suppliers with Mexican cartels, Zhang was captured after fleeing house arrest in Mexico through a wall and attempting to reach Russia via Cuba.
Russian officials denied him entry, sending him back to Havana, where Cuban authorities detained and later extradited him.
His removal follows increased cooperation between Mexico and Washington on drug enforcement under President Claudia Sheinbaum and President Trump’s pressure to combat fentanyl smuggling.
Despite the high-profile arrest, experts say Zhang’s capture will have little long-term effect on the global drug trade.
