Craig Manders of New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against Connecticut-based African Portfolio, alleging negligence after his wife, Lisa Manders, was killed by a hippopotamus during a safari in Zambia last year.
The couple was on a guided “bush walk” when a hippo charged from the water, violently attacking Mrs. Manders, resulting in her death.
The lawsuit claims that the safari operator failed to ensure their safety, noting that their armed guide fled during the attack, leaving Craig to witness the horrifying incident.
The suit argues that the couple were not adequately warned of the dangers posed by approaching the riverbank near the wild hippo.
African Portfolio’s attorney stated that the tour was arranged by Chiawa Safaris, whose experienced guide, ranger, and armed scout accompanied the couple.
He claimed all safety protocols were followed, including multiple verbal warnings for the guests to return to their vehicle.
Despite these claims, Craig Manders is seeking at least $15,000 in damages for funeral costs and related expenses, citing emotional trauma and loss.
The Manders, who shared a love for travel and family, had been married for decades and leave behind three children and a granddaughter.
