Killer Siale Siale has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison for the manslaughter of 21-year-old Luke Smith, who was killed by a single punch on a night out in Wellington.
Smith, who had recently emigrated from South Africa, was struck unconscious and later died in hospital after falling from the blow and hitting his head on the road.
His parents, devastated by their only child’s death, described their lives as shattered beyond repair.
Judge Dale La Hood highlighted the role of “toxic masculinity” in such violent acts and considered both aggravating and mitigating factors in sentencing.
Judge La Hood considered aggravating factors such as the unprovoked nature of the attack, the force of the punch, and Siale’s callous behaviour afterward but granted sentence reductions for his early guilty plea, lack of prior convictions, remorse, and efforts at rehabilitation. Citing Siale’s challenging background and commitment to change, the judge applied a 50% discount, sentencing him to two years and three months in prison.
Smith’s family expressed disappointment at the sentence, though they acknowledged no punishment could bring their son back.
