EB Games has proposed shutting down its entire New Zealand operation, including all 38 stores and its distribution centre, a move that would see all local roles disestablished if confirmed.
In a letter to seen by state media, managing director Shane Stockwell said the proposal is subject to consultation and no final decision has been made.
The Australian-owned retailer cited ongoing commercial pressures and a multi-million-dollar loss in the 2024 financial year, saying the business is no longer viable in a sluggish retail market.
The company said it has attempted multiple turnaround strategies and explored selling the New Zealand business without success. Staff have been invited to provide feedback by 12 January, with possible relocation opportunities to Australia also flagged.
