Australian authorities are preparing for the arrival of four women linked to Islamic State and nine children returning from Syria, with some expected to be arrested and investigated upon landing.
The group departed the Al Roj refugee camp in late April and are due to arrive in Australia on Thursday night. Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett confirmed law enforcement agencies had spent years gathering evidence into possible terrorism and crimes against humanity offences, including allegations linked to slave trading. Authorities said some women may face charges while others remain under active investigation.
Intelligence agencies, including ASIO, have also assessed the returning cohort and warned they will remain under close scrutiny. The Albanese Government insists it did not assist the group’s return, despite being notified once flights were booked.
Children returning with the group are expected to undergo integration, counselling and counter-extremism programs as security agencies continue monitoring further possible arrivals from Syria.
