More than 50 years after the disappearance of three-year-old British girl Cheryl Grimmer from a Wollongong beach, an Australian MP has used parliamentary privilege to reveal the identity of “Mercury,” a man previously charged but never convicted over her abduction and murder.
Jeremy Buckingham named the man and read his 1971 teenage confession in the New South Wales Parliament, urging a new investigation into the case that has long haunted Cheryl’s family.
The suspect cannot be named outside of parliament due to long-standing suppression orders.
The family, who migrated from the UK shortly before Cheryl vanished, has demanded answers and renewed calls for justice, while NSW Police maintain the investigation remains open with a A$1 million reward still available. A parliamentary inquiry into long-term missing persons cases, including Cheryl’s, is now underway.
