Police in Invercargill are investigating the theft of numerous burial plaques taken from grave sites at St Johns Cemetery, including several belonging to Returned Service personnel from the First and Second World Wars.

The plaques are believed to have been stolen sometime between 28 October and 22 November 2025, in what authorities describe as a deeply distressing crime for families and the wider community.

Acting Inspector Mel Robertson, Area Prevention Manager, said the targeting of veterans’ graves has caused particular anguish, and urged anyone with information to come forward. Police are asking the public to call 105 and quote event number 251125/6603 if they can assist the investigation. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
