The Charter School Agency has instructed the seven newly established charter schools to keep their enrolment numbers confidential, arguing that disclosure could harm their commercial viability during the critical establishment phase.
While most schools remain tight-lipped, some—such as Māori boarding school Tipene and the Auckland French International School—have shared their modest but growing rolls.
According to a report in state-funded media, Tipene credits its flexible scheduling, cultural focus and other factors for attracting families, while the French school highlights strong demand for its bilingual approach.
The agency is now reviewing 52 new charter school applications and two state school conversion proposals for next year.
