Colorado family flees to NZ in wake of Trump’s crackdown on gender ideology

Let Kids Be Kids, a New Zealand-based, parent-led grassroots network, has published a Substack post detailing the relocation of a Colorado family to New Zealand.

The family cites fears over recent U.S. executive orders signed by President Donald Trump, specifically Executive Order 14168, titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” which states there are only two sexes.

Executive Order 14187, “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” restricts gender-affirming medical care for minors under 19. These orders limit federal funding for such treatments, citing their potential for irreversible harm. This has resulted in the closure of several youth gender programs across the United States in recent weeks. These measures prompted the family to seek a more supportive environment for their child’s well-being in New Zealand.

In contrast, New Zealand’s approach to gender-affirming care remains more permissive, with the Ministry of Health supporting access to puberty blockers and hormone therapies for transgender youth under evidence-based standards. Recent pressure from gender-affirming care advocates, as highlighted by the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA) in their May 28, 2025, statement, underscores tensions in New Zealand.

PATHA’s call for the immediate publication of updated clinical guidelines for gender-affirming care, delayed despite approval from Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora, suggests significant advocacy efforts to expand access to these treatments, raising concerns about political influence in healthcare policy.

Additionally, there is strong political pressure from the Green Party to provide even greater access to puberty blockers for children.

Let Kids Be Kids is committed to empowering New Zealand parents to protect their children’s physical, mental, and emotional health. They advocate for transparent, parent-centered policies in education and healthcare, ensuring families can make informed decisions free from ideological pressures. Let Kids Be Kids is a member of the International Coalition 4 Children.

    • In their story they state the child has been this way for a few years… which would mean that around 6 yers old this poor boy (I think) has been told that they can in fact become a girl. This is an instance where the parents are on-board. Most situations we have heard of in NZ is when the child is ideologically influenced outside the family, and the family are told that if they do not comply with ‘gender transition’ the child will likely suicide. Which is a lie. The parents who celebrate and encourage this, are the most troubling ones of all. They do exist in NZ. Scary to think that NZ is seen as a refuge for such families. The gender clinics will be rubbing their hands with glee.

  1. I’m not a fan of puberty blockers. In saying that I don’t know what parents of a child who doesn’t identify as the sex they were born go through.

Is this not parent centred, with the parents obviously concerned for the childs’ health? Does it not count if they make decisions Let Kids Be Kids disagree with?

    Hypocrisy much

  2. Once they realize the cost of living in NZ, they will only be to glad to go back to the US. About $13 for 1 US gallon of gas to start with, sucker’s.
