A coroner has found that a man who died after being buried in a collapsing sand dune on Auckland’s west coast could not have survived his injuries, despite frantic rescue attempts by a companion, bystanders, and emergency services.
The man became trapped while digging into a dune, with only his feet visible before being freed unresponsive and flown to hospital, where he died two days later.
The coroner concluded the death resulted from the victim’s own actions, citing asphyxia, cardiac arrest, and organ damage caused by the sand’s weight and pressure, and noted no failures by others contributed.
The report warns that sand dunes can become unstable without warning and urges beachgoers to avoid digging into them.
