Cyclone Vaianu is forecast to move south across the North Island on Sunday, bringing a dangerous combination of damaging winds, heavy rain, and coastal inundation in what authorities warn is a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event.
Red and Orange warnings are in place across large parts of the North Island, including Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, and Bay of Plenty, with wind gusts expected to reach up to 140km/h and rainfall totals as high as 150–180mm in some regions.
The severe conditions raise the risk of widespread power outages, flooding, slips, falling trees, and transport disruption, with impacts heavily dependent on the cyclone’s track.
Residents are being urged to stay informed, secure property, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for possible isolation and infrastructure damage as conditions intensify.
