Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against US military facilities in Jordan and Bahrain following American strikes in southern Iran that Tehran says hit a residential building hosting a wedding celebration.
Iranian authorities said shrapnel from a US strike struck a house in Kuhestak, Hormozgan Province, killing several people, including a child, and leaving dozens injured. Iranian media subsequently reported that 68 people had been wounded.
The US military began attacking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, saying the operation followed alleged Iranian attempts to target commercial shipping and American forces in the region.
US President Donald Trump described the American strikes as “large and powerful” and warned that any Iranian retaliation would be met with a stronger response.
The IRGC later announced what it described as a “punishing response,” saying ballistic missiles had been launched at Camp Titin, a US military facility near Aqaba in southern Jordan. The IRGC claimed US personnel were killed and military equipment, including helicopters, was destroyed. Those claims had not been confirmed by Washington in the material provided.
Iran’s regular military separately said drones were deployed against Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, with radar installations and areas used by American forces among the targets.
Jordanian authorities said 13 ballistic missiles entered the country’s airspace during the attacks. Ten were intercepted, while three reportedly landed away from populated areas.
The latest escalation follows an earlier exchange of strikes after US forces attacked Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran responded by targeting American military positions in Jordan.
Tensions have also intensified economically. Washington has announced additional sanctions against Tehran and threatened measures against foreign banks and companies continuing financial dealings with Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said new secondary sanctions would be introduced on a weekly basis.
