Former Labour Leader Andrew Little to contest Wellington mayoralty

Andrew Little news

Former Labour Party leader and senior Cabinet Minister Andrew “Angry Andy” Little has announced his candidacy for Wellington mayor, joining a crowded field of six others including incumbent Tory Whanau, who is backed by the Green Party.

Little, now a Wellington-based legal consultant, said he would focus on infrastructure, public transport, housing, and community services, while opposing asset sales and service closures.

Little led Labour in 2014 before stepping aside for Jacinda Ardern in 2017 and later held 12 senior ministerial portfolios, including Health, Treaty Negotiations, and Justice. He is seeking the Wellington Labour Party’s endorsement.

In addition to Little and Whanau, the current field of candidates is:

  • Ray Chung – A current city councillor making his second run for mayor. He’s focused on financial responsibility and improving Wellington’s economic and social conditions.
  • Rob Goulden – A former city councillor. He wants a more cooperative council, cost control, and a rethink of projects like cycleways.
  • Kelvin Hastie – A conservationist known for Predator Free Crofton Downs. He’s calling for a pause on major projects and wants public consultation on possibly merging regional councils to cut costs.
  • Karl Tiefenbacher – A businessman and founder of Kaffee Eis. Running as an independent, he aims to limit rate increases, stop some big projects, and cut council spending.
  • Graham Bloxham – Former owner of Wellington Live. He proposes cutting rates, promoting tourism, reducing council staff, and boosting local biodiversity.

The election will be held on October 11, 2025. Nominations open July 4 and close August 1.

  1. Ah cool.

Another evil creepy corrupt narcissistic self-serving communist mayor.

    That’s exactly what Wellington needs.

    Not.

  2. Reminds me of a therapy patient, a union functionary, gnarly as they come.
Was crying at bedrock pediment, wanted his mother back and in the end forgave his father and other tormentors.
    They all need therapy.

    • Doesn’t matter who votes or doesn’t vote. It matters how much money’s behind him.

The guy is a woke, globalist commie, with huge connections to the previous regime.

That office is basically already his.

    • Just like people who will vote for Phil Goff as Auckland Mayor…both ‘former’ Labour ‘Leaders’ (Commissars).

  3. Aren’t the left a truly parasitic class, unions to parliament to local bodies, never once adding any value to anything, just sucking the life out of the good people.

  4. Can’t understand why those professional sociopath always try do run for offices? Is it time to protect our society from those parricides?

  5. You don’t need many smarts to become Mayor of Wellington
    As has been proven
And where they now find themselves
    The Golden Mile Rejoice

  6. Yuck and double yuck! Wonder if poor Wellington will ever have a decent mayor? Mind you, just look at the creatures that have slithered into office in Auckland!
