Gene Tech Bill advances despite opposition

Gene Technology Bill news

The Health Select Committee has recommended passing the Gene Technology Bill, which would overhaul New Zealand’s 1996 GMO regulations and introduce a risk-based system overseen by a new “Gene Technology Regulator” within the Environmental Protection Authority.

The committee argued the change was needed to align with modern scientific practice and Australia’s model, but opposition parties warned the process was rushed, poorly consulted, and stripped of environmental and Māori safeguards. More than 14,000 submissions were received, the vast majority opposing the bill according to GE Honesty.

The committee voted unanimously to recommend all amendments. Committee members were:

  • Sam Uffindell (Chairperson)
  • Dr Hamish Campbell
  • Dr Carlos Cheung
  • Ingrid Leary
  • Cameron Luxton
  • Hūhana Lyndon
  • Jenny Marcroft
  • Debbie Ngarewa-Packer
  • Ayesha Verrall

Steve Abel, Reuben Davidson, Hon Mark Patterson, and Hon Dr Deborah Russell also participated in consideration of the Bill.

Public interest groups GE Honesty and Organics Aotearoa NZ condemned the report’s findings. GE Honesty accused the government of ignoring 97 percent of public submissions rejecting the bill, saying MPs were not listening to New Zealanders’ concerns. Organics Aotearoa NZ said the recommendations failed to protect public health or the environment and would weaken New Zealand’s GMO-free status. Both groups have called on MPs to reject the bill at its next reading, warning it risks eroding public trust and environmental safeguards.

NZ First continue to harbour reservations about the Bill, and GE Honesty recommend concerned citizens contact NZ First MPs as “they are the only party standing in the way of this legislation.”

    • Have had a uniparty for decades…..all just pushing the globalist agenda. Im old and the govt. In this country has never ever represented me. I demand the right to self identify as some one who does not have to pay rates or tax.

  1. The NZ and Australian governments do what ever the pharma companies tell them to do.
In return they get “funding” (bribes) for university “research and development”.
It’s not about health, it’s about the bribes.

  2. Huhana Lyndon, A Green MP isnt she? voting FOR this bill??? What a disgrace to the environment the Greens are!! We dont live in a democracy anymore wake up people!!

    • Debbie Ngarewa-Packer also sticks out like a sore thumb. Does this sound like it would be in the interest of TPM supporters?

  3. Dirty as hell but then that’s what New Zealand is these days, a magnet for corruption and sleazy foreign influence. This will irreparably damage our environment, get into our waterways and ruin our ag and hort, export market.

Vote for anyone opposed to this, we can’t have another term of these creeps.

  4. Just more Proof that it does not matter who is in power or what the people want we will always end with puppets pushing the globalist agenda.

  5. Do these people really fully understand the implications ramifications nor consequences of what they are paving the way to become Law?
    Like in the US
The biggest bill ever presented to the U.S. Congress is the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, which totaled over $2.3 trillion and spanned 5,593 pages—making it both the largest in dollar value and the longest in length.
So did the Congress – House of Representatives the Senate and the President fully read and understand what they were paving the way to be passed into Law?
    It is very doubtful
And which why the governments of men like the traditions of men are flawed and are damage control in perpetual motion through oversight – perception through a lens viewed darkly
And which why they can never deliver

  6. So when you drive past PGG Wrightsons, farmlands, fonterra and all the others understand they all want GMO.
The big issue is New Zealand’s agricultural private sector has been over run with treasonous actors fulfilling the climate/GMO model of the globalists, they are now exposed officially, a pack of sellouts.

    • Disgusting, the uni party in action despite 97% opposition. Any point of difference NZ agriculture has on the global market will die with this bill.

  7. And just before the select committee’s ruling that may cause mass protests to persuade the non-listening poli’s, the police were given powers to shut down areas due to anti-social disturbances/possible ones and public safety.

This bill needs to be defeated. I don’t hold out much hope for NZ First voting against unless the public makes enough noise.

  8. This is such a change in direction for New Zealand. NZ has the largest sea barrier of any develop country.

We do not have democracy in New Zealand. Simply because success governments do not listen to the people.

No one campaigned on this shit. We the people do not have a say.

Labour and National are two cheeks of the same ass.. We know politicians are led by the nose. Fully committed to the agenda.

Can you imagine just how popular NZ food and water would be if it was the last place on earth who did not have gene technology in our food,

Our exports volume would remain the same, but our price would double then triple, sell to the highest bidder.

Luxon and Hipkins ruined the economy and now they are about to ruin our clean green exports.

Hard to believe these guys don’t understand the basics of human nature.

Pissed of people people seek justice. Some through courts, others through removal of trade. This however is a whole nation who does not want to eat or drink technology. We want freah clean food.

The next protest will make the last one look like an episode of Playschool. It will be nationwide. We are heading for rolling strikes.

  9. These are all the reasons I left NZ over 30 years ago. You have to realise the Govt. are not there for you they are there for themselves. To pump the ponzi housing market which they are all a part of and enrich themselves by what ever means it takes. Half of them have never had a real job but have become emboiled in the self serving free loading enviroment. They are all just sellouts to the Globalists agenda. I reckon that by 2030 the NZD will be down to 50c and most of the young smart ones will have taken flight leaving NZ with a total brain drain. The rest of the populace will be left unable to even think about buying a house and if they do manage to scrimp enough to make it, their exorbitant Council rates could be as big as their mortgage. This is of course if by then you even have a job. At your next local Coucil public meeting why dont you ask your Councillors how much money they owe to International Central Banks. Hamilton and Tauranga are showing up on the radar. When the Councils cant squeeze anymore money out of ratepayers and heaven forbid your Council defaults on its loans, those International Banks are going to come looking for wood. As in collateral as in your house. NZs managed decline. Not a rosy picture.

    • Most people could afford to pay a mortgage
But remain occupied in being consumed in normal day to day living expenses
And can never save the deposit
The top lives off the bottom
Or put more eloquently “dog eat dog”

  10. Proof that the power structure will change- narcissists like pond scum rise to the top. We vote for their lies not what they do.

  11. These disgusting parasites think money will flood into New Zealand from biotech, we will be the Guinea pigs for their Frankenstein experiments. Just selling this country to the lowest bidders.

  12. If this goes through we will not know what the f*ck we will be eating
The kiwi sheeple is just another pawn on the geo political chess board – another commodity to be exploited and used – a hostage taken prisoner with a gun at the head with seemingly no way out
This is a foot in the door to open a floodgate being a plethora of harmful elements unleahed into the NZ food landscape
To the detriment of the health and well being of all NZ’s
