The UK is the latest country to ramp up efforts to control online information.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a National Centre for Information Defence to “detect, attribute and disrupt” hostile-state attacks. He told the UN that the UK had given “too much ground” to a “negative, corrosive narrative about life” in the country.
The centre will sit in the Prime Minister’s office and work with intelligence agencies, police, departments and social media firms.
Critics labelled it a “Ministry of Truth” and warned of an “Orwellian” slide toward governments deciding what information would be acceptable. Burnham did not specify its powers, oversight or if it would be limited to foreign interference.
