Former Prime Minister Sir John Key asked National supporters at the party’s campaign launch not to give their party vote to a minor party.
Sir John said some of National’s “most talented ministers would be replaced by someone you have never heard of”. However, commentators argued that an electorate vote for National and a party vote for NZ First or ACT was the only way to block the left-leaning parties.
One pointed out that National would need another 6–7% of the party vote in four weeks to govern without the split, noting National “would rather lose the election” than share power with a stronger NZ First and ACT.

Yes and further to my comment, my husband is party voting Act and I am party voting NZ First and we are both candidate voting the National incumbent (reluctantly) so strategic voting all they way here- spread the word. If all national voters do this we will get a massive overhang and almost permanent right wing government! Forever! 😂😂😂

I’d encourage all voters to support Direct Democracy and bring an end to the fake democracy party political system.

You are correct. The problem with these small parties is they just want to be big parties and replace the current parties and carry on this BS.
They all need to put down their ambitions and form a single issue coalition that will destroy the status quo and yes, the only way out is Direct democracy, then when they get to the coalition table with their king maker +5% their is only 1 option on the table, no room for maneuvering.
Once it is in place it is the mechanism to tear down the rest of the system.
But will they do it? set out to destroy what they seek to convert? No, it is not in their nature, people who seek power would not set out destroy power.
National voters, no just “voters”. This kind of attitude is a a big part of the problem. National are not the only party on offer this election and like Labour, I see little to suggest they want to listen to the people they think should vote for them. Unless you have policies people like, why would someone like me waste a vote on either of you?
To my mind this India FTA proposition, Gene Tech nonsense and Social Media Ban for under 16’s (Proxy Digital ID) should all have gone through a referendum, given the impact they could have on NZ but NO, we will do as we like and form “team TEAL” as needed, if we need to get things across the line. Voting for a party that is likely to get a lot of the electorate seats, is casting a party vote near 1/2 the value of your preferred second preferred coilition partner.
Last election ;
1. Nats won 38% of the party vote, which if allocated based on votes cast, should have awarded 20 list seats. The system that we have, devised by the politicians allocated 5 list seats to the Nats.
2. Lab won 21% of the party vote, which if allocated based on votes cast, should have awarded 10 list seats. The system that we have, devised by the politicians allocated 21 list seats to the Nats.
The system was derived to ensure the minor parties which achieved 5% had a meaningful representation. In reality the system was to ensure those sitting on list, just below electorate seat contestants likely to be elected, would win list MP positions. So if a major party wanted any of their people to become MPs, they would put then top of the list. Eg Winston, Seymor.
Last election
Nats won 38% of the party vote and got allocated 5 of 51 list seats, 9% of the list seats.
Lab won 27% of the party vote and got allocated 17 of 51 list seats, 33% of the list seats.
GRN won 11.6% of the party vote and got allocated 12 of 51 list seats, 24% of the list seats.
ACT won 8.6% of the party vote and got allocated 9 of 51 list seats, 18% of the list seats.
NZF won 6.0% of the party vote and got allocated 8 of 51 list seats, 16% of the list seats.
