Former Prime Minister Sir John Key asked National supporters at the party’s campaign launch not to give their party vote to a minor party.
Sir John said some of National’s “most talented ministers would be replaced by someone you have never heard of”. However, commentators argued that an electorate vote for National and a party vote for NZ First or ACT was the only way to block the left-leaning parties.
One pointed out that National would need another 6–7% of the party vote in four weeks to govern without the split, noting National “would rather lose the election” than share power with a stronger NZ First and ACT.

Get stuffed John, you’re the reason I stopped voting National. You and Steven Joyce with your study for residency, fuelled mass immigration amd allowed the housing market to go absolutely mental so that our kids struggle to get on the property ladder. I’ll vote for our local National candidate so as not to give any power to the left or split conservative candidate vote but I will NEVER give National the party vote EVER again. Oh and I’d rather have someone I had never heard of with integrity than some career politicians who have sold their soul to the UN, the WHO and the Climate SCAM.
