Green Party List MP Darleen Tana has been suspended due to allegations of migrant exploitation at her husband’s company E Cycles NZ.
Tana is the third member of the party to face serious allegations over the last year following bullying accusations against Elizabeth Kerekere and shoplifting charges against Golriz Ghahraman.
Party co-leaders Marama Davidson and Chlöe Swarbrick announced the suspension to legacy media this morning. An investigation by an ‘independent lawyer’ is underway.
The suspension comes after two complaints of migrant expoitation were filed in the Employment Relations Authority against E Cycles NZ.
Swarbrick told the Mike Hosking Breakfast there was a potential conflict of interest between Tana’s small business portfolio and the role in her husband’s business activities. While she has not been a director or shareholder of the company since 2019, it is understood the complaints involve allegations against her. Tana advised the party of the complaints on 1 and 9 February but the party moved to suspend her believing she may have known of the allegations before then.
