Hundreds of illegal migrants attempt Christmas Day English Channel crossing

Christmas Day in the UK saw heightened illegal migrant activity in the English Channel, as improved weather conditions facilitated crossings.

Over 350 individuals had reached UK waters by the morning, with hundreds more attempting the journey.

A lull in poor weather allowed small boats to navigate calmer seas, with Border Force vessels intercepting some migrants near Dover.

Foggy conditions posed additional risks, as small boats shared waters with large container ships in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Authorities on both sides of the Channel remain on high alert as thousands of migrants reportedly wait along the northern French coast, ready to seize the opportunity presented by the favourable conditions.

This surge in crossings highlights the ongoing crisis, with over 35,000 illegals having made the journey this year—a 20% increase from 2023.

Despite pledges from the Starmer government to crack down on people-smuggling networks, operations continue unabated, with smugglers offering “Christmas special” deals to encourage crossings.

The issue has drawn sharp political criticism, with opposition parties highlighting the need for improved border security and international cooperation. With the weather expected to remain favourable in the coming days, authorities anticipate further crossings.
