An inquiry has been launched into National MP for Whanganui Carl Bates after he failed to declare 25 properties linked to him and his family, many of which are rentals.
Bates has maintained he is only a beneficiary of a family trust and acted on advice from the Registrar of Pecuniary Interests, but a mistakenly posted social media message under his account defending his actions has drawn further scrutiny.
The Registrar Maarten Wevers confirmed that Labour MP Glen Bennett requested the inquiry and determined it was warranted under parliamentary Standing Orders.
Bates, restricted from commenting while the inquiry is underway, has previously said he divested from his business interests when entering politics and has no involvement in the family property portfolio.

Who’s been a naughty boy then.
I bet he’s not alone either… now you know why the Polly’s never want to address the housing issue. Shows you few have any morals.
While everybody is struggling this grifter appears to want to have his cake and eat it too
Not surprising
We have a new breed of politician in this country that do not give a tinkers toss about its future or that of the future of its people
Only in kick backs and lining their own pockets at others expense
Scurrilous incriminating and unacceptable behavior
Parliament now resembles more of a mad house – bedlam
It appears any deranged psychologically disturbed idiot can enter
Which the inmates have taken over and who are running with consequential results
Descent standards in this country appear to have taken a back seat to what is perceived as being morally repugnant and unacceptable
Relegated in reduced status to and being confined to that of being in a straight jacket
Where logical rational thinking appears to be rationed and in short supply
I believe many politicians have substantial property interests. I’m sure many are delighted as prices creep higher and higher. Meanwhile ordinary people struggle to pay the mortgage and the banks, cash in.
