Parliament’s Justice Committee has recommended passing the Electoral Amendment Bill with several changes, including transitional rules for prisoner voting and requirements for the Electoral Commission to notify people when updating their enrolment details.
Opposition parties warn the legislation will disenfranchise thousands.
The bill would end same-day enrolments by imposing a 13-day cut-off before election day, reinstate a ban on prisoner voting, tighten treating rules, remove postal voting requirements, and allow automatic enrolment updates.
Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori all sharply criticised the proposals, arguing they restrict access to the ballot box, disproportionately harm Māori, young, and minority voters, and undermine democratic rights—concerns echoed by Attorney-General Judith Collins, who found the bill inconsistent with the Bill of Rights Act and likely to disenfranchise more than 100,000 people.
Despite 80 percent of submitters opposing the bill, the government is pushing ahead, saying electoral participation “comes with responsibilities”.

Just for once Collins is right. To me this feels like a form of legislated electoral fraud ,that will benefit parties of the rich and elite. National need to be shown the door. This is “not” democracy.
How does it benefit the rich and the elite?
