A collision in the Bay of Islands on April 13, 2023, resulted from failures in proper watchkeeping by both skippers involved, according to a report from the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC).
The incident involved the historic Waitere ferry, also known as the Blue Ferry, which was hit by the powerboat Onepoto traveling at more than 20 knots. The impact destroyed the ferry’s wheelhouse, critically injuring its skipper, who suffered multiple injuries, including a broken spine. Fortunately, none of the 19 passengers aboard the ferry were seriously harmed, although one was thrown into the water, and some children experienced lasting psychological trauma. The ferry sank about an hour after the collision and was later deemed irreparable. The powerboat’s skipper and passenger were uninjured.
The TAIC report highlighted the failure of both vessels to maintain a proper lookout, noting that the Onepoto was responsible for giving way in this situation but failed to do so. Speed played a significant role, with Onepoto traveling at 20.5 knots while its skipper was distracted by an engine alarm. Had the powerboat been moving slower, the collision might have been avoided or minimised.
The report also noted shortcomings in Waitere’s safety management system, which left passengers to take control after the skipper was incapacitated. In July 2024, Onepoto’s skipper was charged with dangerous operation of a vessel, resulting in a guilty plea and a fine of $128,000 in emotional harm reparation to the victims.

Never use the autopilot(s) in a bay or harbour location, and set watches as required by law!
We certainly had a crossover
