Luxon blasts OECD LNG warning as ‘rubbish’

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has rejected OECD criticism of the Government’s proposed LNG import facility, calling the report “a load of rubbish” and insisting the coalition remains strongly interested in the Taranaki project.

The OECD warned the plan could lock New Zealand into “long-term fossil fuel dependence” and recommended alternatives such as biomass and pumped hydro instead.

According to state media, Luxon said the Government was focused on fixing what it viewed as Labour’s failed energy policy and would continue assessing the commercial viability of the LNG proposal while also backing renewable energy and strategic fuel reserves.

Energy Minister Simeon Brown defended the facility as the Government’s preferred option for managing dry-year electricity shortages, while Labour leader Chris Hipkins labelled the project a “gold-plated bad idea” that would increase household power bills and deepen reliance on volatile fossil fuels.

  1. Anyone backing these climate clowns is a fool. The simple reality like it or not is we are reliant on traditional fuel, as this crisis has clearly underlined. Want clean alternatives, sure develop them (if they are viable) but in the meantime accept reality for what it is.

Neither National or Labour are on the right page and frankly anyone voting for them is living in an alternate universe. We need Marsden Point re-opened as a matter of urgency.

  2. LNG & LPG burns 99% clean, with an equal to 99 Octane, and extends engine life by up to 3x’s!
More time between oil changes…lessening fossil oil waste. Also much less costly!!

    • Yeah right.
It may burn 99% clean but needs Upper Cylinder Oil Lubricant to protect the motor.
While petrol doesn’t require upper cylinder lubricants (UCL), LPG, and LNG engines need UCL to prevent valve and cylinder wear. These lubricant additives themselves contribute to pollution. They can account for up to 25% of particulate matter emissions in car engines and are a major source of metallic ash, clogging converters and filters (and your lungs) and result in increase of organic carbon emissions.

      • Ever heard of a wet sump or dry sump oil system that can accept silicon-based additives that were designed and engineered to be a UCL, ie STP?
        Or…Magnatech oils?
I’m not worried…going to swap out my 460 KM V-6 for an upgraded 307 V-8 w/ LPG for my Holden Commodore.
My case of Magnatech oil and STP oil additive are on the shelf awaiting the engine swap!

    • Solar Panels are exorbantly expensive, and barely give a return after 7 years, and even less as energy / electricity prices go up.
In addition, with more high winds now happening in NZ, the damned things blow away unless anchored into the ground, and not on the roof…
Couple that with an EMP from asolar flare, a nuke going off over NZ, and you then have a piece of burned-out useless electrical appliance.

    • They famously tried in France a couple years ago to put special solar panels on a particularly hot stretch of highway. First week it collected almost no sunlight due to all the bumper to bumper traffic blocking out the sunlight.

Second week the solar panels started to crack and shatter from the weight of all those cars and trucks.

      €5 million for 1 km👍

Climate crazies are crazy. Just use oil, oil is cool, oil is sexy and fun. All the cool countries use oil. We should be cool too.

  3. The OECD was recommending raising the age of super last week. 1 day layer National were announcing it as policy for next election.

I’m for being kind to the planet. Saying that, before I will believe the climate is in as bad shape as alarmists claim, governments need to acknowledge the weather modification that has been happening, stop it globally, and give it a year or 2, so a true measure can be taken.

Wishful thinking I know. Meanwhile can NZ leave the OECD,and tell it to take a hike, out of NZ’s affairs
