Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s latest declaration of support for Ukraine has triggered a torrent of public backlash, with critics accusing him of ignorance, globalist allegiance, and wasting New Zealand taxpayers’ money on a foreign conflict.
In a post on X this morning, Luxon claimed “progress has been made” toward peace after participating in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other world leaders. He insisted New Zealand “stands steadfast in support of Ukraine” and urged Russia to “come to the table and agree a negotiated solution.”

The reaction online was overwhelmingly hostile, with many accusing the Prime Minister of parroting Western globalist propaganda and ignoring the domestic crises facing New Zealand.
One user unleashed a lengthy rebuke, writing: “Wow! Your lack of knowledge and wisdom on these matters knows no bounds. He is nothing more than a paid actor … who has embezzled billions. Remember it was the Russian speaking Ukraine’s that plead to Putin to rescue them. And Putin deserves to protect his borders.” The same commenter accused Luxon of being “lured in by propaganda and globalists,” adding: “The fact you stand with Ukraine … while sending our tax payers money to him makes many Kiwis want to leave this country.”
Others criticised the Government’s financial commitments at a time when many New Zealanders are struggling, with one user demanding: “Stop funding wars.”
Several replies questioned the legitimacy of Ukraine itself, repeating claims of corruption and Western manipulation. One stated bluntly: “We do NOT support the child sex trafficking, human trafficking, organ trafficking, drug trafficking CIA run Ukraine, home of money laundering & bioweapon labs.”
Another user accused Luxon of a gimp-like subservience to foreign powers, writing: “You’ll say anything to suck up your masters,” while another remarked: “Yeh, instead of sucking off your globalist buddies, it would be great to actually do some work for New Zealanders.”
Calls for neutrality were a recurring theme, with multiple commenters insisting the war has nothing to do with New Zealand. One wrote: “Keep out of it. We should be neutral. Not our circus, not our monkeys.”
Others questioned Luxon’s understanding of the conflict’s history, pointing to pro-Russian referendums and failed peace talks sabotaged largely by Western warmongers. One user argued: “A negotiated solution was already on the table in March 2022 — and it was Kyiv, under Western pressure, that walked away from it. Calling today for ‘a negotiated solution that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty’ ignores that this war escalated precisely because previous agreements — Minsk I, Minsk II and the 2022 Istanbul framework — were never implemented.”
Another commenter offered a similar view: “On the first page of the UN Charter it says … self-determination of peoples. Donbas, Lugansk, Crimea held referendums supported by 80%+ voters.”
The hostility extended to outright ridicule of the Prime Minister’s diplomatic posturing, with one user jeering: “Sit down ya clown. Trump and his Administration have been doing all the hard work negotiating a peace deal … You’re an utter embarrassment.”
Frustration over domestic issues also surfaced, with critics asking why the Government was prioritising Ukraine. “Worry about why so many young people are leaving NZ, Luxxo,” one wrote.
Another commenter declared bluntly: “It’s nothing to do with us. Giving our money to a corrupt regime in the northern hemisphere is not winning you the next election.”
Several replies accused Luxon of ignorance or manipulation: “Sad really when someone has no history education,” and “If you even believe any of that, then you are in the wrong job.”
The angriest responses accused the West of hypocrisy and aggression, with one user asserting: “Since when has the West followed the UN charter? … In the last 3 years, they started a proxy war with Russia. Bombed Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and is about to bomb Venezuela. Not to mention 7 attempted regime change operations of democratically elected governments.” The commenter concluded: “New Zealand, you are supporting terrorists.”
Despite the fierce blowback, Luxon has given no indication he intends to shift position, reiterating that New Zealand will continue supporting Ukraine. However, the sheer volume and intensity of the backlash suggests growing public frustration with foreign policy commitments while domestic pressures mount, leaving Luxon increasingly exposed to accusations that he is prioritising global posturing and virtue-signalling over national interest.
