Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tehran for a mass al-Quds Day protest in support of Palestinians as the death toll from ongoing United States and Israeli attacks on Iran continued to rise.
Iranian state television reported that at least one person was killed after multiple explosions were heard around the march, including near Ferdowsi Square, shortly after Israel had warned people to leave the area ahead of a planned strike.
State broadcaster Press TV said a woman was killed by shrapnel from a US-Israeli air strike.
The rally came a day after Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei pledged the country would continue fighting despite the offensive, which Iran’s Ministry of Health says has killed 1,444 people and wounded 18,551 since February 28.
Iran has responded by firing missiles and drones across the region and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said missiles and drones were launched at Israel in coordination with Hezbollah using precision-guided Kheibar Shekan missiles.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joined the demonstration, urging people to disappoint Iran’s enemies by taking to the streets in greater numbers than ever before.
Al-Quds Day is observed each year in many countries as a demonstration of solidarity with Palestinians and opposition to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, with Al-Quds being the Arabic name for Jerusalem.
