Massive Tongariro blaze forces hiker evacuations and highway closures

A massive wildfire has engulfed about 400 hectares of Tongariro National Park, forcing the evacuation of 43 hikers and a hut warden and prompting the closure of State Highway 47.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the blaze, which began near SH47 on Saturday afternoon, remains uncontrolled and is burning toward Mount Ngauruhoe.

Thirteen fire crews and four helicopters battled the flames before nightfall, but operations were suspended overnight for safety reasons.

Authorities warn that shifting winds could drive the fire north toward SH46, and both the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Northern Circuit have been closed. Police, DOC, and iwi are coordinating the response as officials urge residents and motorists to avoid the area and stay alert.

  1. Is Tongariro National Park part of the Lake Taupo erruptions?
Tongariro National Park is geologically connected to the Taupō Volcanic Zone, but it is not directly part of the Lake Taupō eruption system.
The park’s volcanoes—Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu—form the southern boundary of the zone, while Lake Taupō itself lies to the north.
Taupō Volcanic Zone (TVZ): A highly active volcanic region stretching from White Island in the Bay of Plenty to Mount Ruapehu in the central North Island.
Tongariro National Park: Contains three major andesitic stratovolcanoes—Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu—which are part of the southern TVZ boundary.
Lake Taupō: Formed by a massive caldera eruption approximately 1,800 years ago (the Hatepe eruption), one of the most violent eruptions in the last 5,000 years.
Shared Volcanic Zone: Both Tongariro and Taupō are part of the same tectonic system, shaped by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Australian Plate.
Lake Taupō: Rhyolitic caldera volcano—produces explosive, high-silica eruptions.
Tongariro Complex: Andesitic stratovolcanoes—less explosive, more frequent eruptions.

  2. “Police, DOC, and iwi are coordinating the response”, Iwi?, what are they going to do, wail some mystical mumbo jumbo chant to appease the mountain gods? FFS give us a fucking break from this part maori cultural rubbish.

  3. Thank golly gosh Iwi, with their toned fire management expertise and sensational organizational prowess, are on hand to help the Fire Service.

  4. What the heck ‘iwi’, who are these? Insanity what the deep state buearecrats and media have forced onto us without our consent.

  5. Watch the MSM in cohort with Iwi grafters now attribute the fire to global warming caused by colonization. Or some such fairytale. This will be arguably used to defend restrictions to access on the land. Except Iwi. They will be granted exclusive rightsm
