Associate Transport Minister James Meager has announced major leadership changes at Maritime New Zealand, confirming the appointment of a new Chair and Deputy Chair alongside two new board members.
Current Deputy Chair Kevin Short will step into the role of Chair from 1 July 2026, succeeding Dame Jo Brosnahan, who has led the board since December 2018. Short has served as Deputy Chair since April 2025.
Meager said Short had already made a significant contribution to the board and had developed a strong understanding of Maritime NZ’s responsibilities and long-term direction. He said Short would provide continuity, experience, and sound judgement in the leadership role.
Charles Finny and Belinda Clark will join the board as new members in late May and June respectively, with Finny to take over as Deputy Chair from 1 July 2026.
Meager said Finny brought extensive governance and public-sector experience, along with expertise in trade, exports, and maritime regulation. He also highlighted Finny’s strong relationships with port chief executives around New Zealand.
Clark was praised for her governance experience and leadership background, particularly in organisational delivery, audit oversight, and risk management across major public-sector agencies in both New Zealand and Australia.
The Minister also paid tribute to Dame Jo Brosnahan for guiding the board through a period marked by significant disruption and change, thanking her for her years of service ahead of her term ending on 30 June 2026.
