NSW Premier Chris Minns says deploying the army to protect Jewish communities has not been ruled out as the state reviews its security approach following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.
Speaking on Sunday, Minns said “nothing is off the table” he told Australian state media, confirming discussions are ongoing and warning Sydneysiders to expect more police carrying long-armed firearms before and after New Year’s Eve.
Minns claimed existing security measures could not continue and acknowledged a major challenge in restoring confidence for Jewish life in Sydney. Minns also indicated the government would consider whether the Jewish Community Security Group NSW should be armed, after warnings of heightened antisemitic risk ahead of a Chanukah event.
Minns said the increased visibility of heavily armed police, while confronting for some, was necessary to reassure the community that public safety is the government’s top priority. He also warned “hate preachers” that authorities would act swiftly to shut down venues breaching conditions, signalling tougher laws and faster enforcement powers.
