Offical data shows police abandoned nearly 60% of reported cases in 2023

Newly released data obtained through the Official Information Act unveils a stark reality: police abandoned a staggering 572,037 cases out of 962,521 emergency calls and reports received last year alone.

This figure amounts to almost 60% of cases reported, signifying a concerning trend in the handling of criminal incidents, according to a report in state media outlet RNZ.

Of most concern is the revelation that 179,957 cases were closed without any investigation whatsoever. Each reported case is evaluated based on a numerical scoring system, with factors such as suspect identification and evidence playing pivotal roles in determining whether an investigation is pursued. Nearly a quarter of a million cases (244,312) were abandoned after exhausting all “reasonable” avenues of inquiry, indicating the limitations faced by law enforcement in identifying suspects.

Equally alarming is the significant increase in cases abandoned at police discretion, which doubled from 7.5% in 2019 to 15% in 2023. This surge underscores growing concerns over the adequacy of police resources and staffing levels, issues repeatedly highlighted by the Police Association. However, the New Zealand Police declined to attribute the data to resource shortages, citing a lack of specific records tracking cases closed due to staffing or resource constraints.

  1. Police have forgotten their oath.
Maybe not the Copper on the street, but certainly the upper brass.
And they have forsaken the People.
They’ve become mercenaries for the global agenda.

    • We know a local cop. He said he doesn’t care anymore. I think that says it all don’t you?

He’s lost confidence in police management and they have little power to give the criminals any real consequences anyway. That’s Cindy’s legacy.

  2. Police are not out to help the public anymore..
Just government enforcers and revenue collectors..more like parking wardens then police officers..next time you get pulled over ask the officer how many murders or rapists have they caught… I bet they have handed out a heap of fines but

  3. PLice too busy following the BS orders of the klaus schwab groomed head of the labour party – then they will use the excuse’we were only following orders’! where have we heard that before, something to do with Nazis????

  4. Don’t pay cops what there worth,Let the crime run mad so people want facial recognition cameras everywhere..
Everything in place for social credit system

  5. Don’t take this as defending the police at all because I have personally seen the failings of the system, and have first hand been subject to their thuggish and inexcusable ways of heavy handedness. Absolutely they do not care about the people that they are supposed to defend and protect.

But just to play Devils advocate here, you would have to analyse the nature of those calls. They cannot just be blanketed in the same need of urgency.

For an example, I know a paramedic who got one emergency call out, only to find that the man who made the call had a tooth ache and he had, had it for about a week.

  6. DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE!!! KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT, AS THEY ARE MASTER INTERROGATORS, AND WILL TRAP YOU IN A VERBAL CORNER AND CHARGE YOU WITH A CRIME YOU DID NOT COMMIT SO AS TO MEET THEIR QUOTA!
Just ask David Bain, and a host of others…!
Always have a paid lawyer present, and not one appointed by the Court.
RECORD ALL ENCOUNTERS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE WITH THE POLICE.
The only two comments you should make is ‘I have no comment’ and ‘I want my Lawyer present’ if things escalate to the point of being bullied, or if you think that you are being coerced and backed into a confrontation, both verbal and physical.
