The US Department of Defense has moved to sever all professional education partnerships with Harvard University, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accusing the institution of promoting political ideologies incompatible with military priorities.
Announcing the decision, Hegseth said the Pentagon is “formally ending ALL Professional Military Education, fellowships, and certificate programs with Harvard University,” describing the move as “long overdue.” He added bluntly: “Harvard is woke; The War Department is not.”

He said too many personnel returned with “heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks.” He also alleged Harvard fostered an environment that “celebrated Hamas,” tolerated harassment of Jewish students, maintained discriminatory practices, and conducted research collaborations linked to the Chinese Communist Party. The Pentagon said the separation will begin with the 2026–27 academic year, although currently enrolled military personnel will be allowed to complete their programs.

The administration previously attempted to freeze federal funding to the university, but a federal judge blocked the move in September 2025, ruling it exceeded executive authority and suggesting anti-Semitism claims had been used as a “smokescreen.” President Donald Trump has since escalated pressure, signalling plans to seek $1 billion in damages from the university over related allegations.
Harvard President Alan Garber has rejected the accusations, describing them as politically motivated and reaffirming the university’s independence. He said Harvard would not “surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights,” while stressing that combating anti-Semitism remains a “moral imperative” for the institution.
