Police updates 6 August 2022 news

Police updates on crimes and investigations for Saturday 6 August 2022.

Levin Incident

Late last evening the man involved in an incident in Bledisloe Street, Levin was transported to hospital in a critical condition to be treated for smoke inhalation.

‘There will be an active Police presence in Levin this weekend as we provide community reassurance and continue the investigation into the Bledisloe Street incident,’ say police.

The man involved remains in Palmerston North Hospital with moderate injuries.

‘As previously stated, cordons in the area have been reduced and residents are able to safely return to their properties. Police will be going door to door today to speak with residents and ensure they have any appropriate support.

‘A scene guard will remain in place at the address as staff continue investigations throughout the weekend.

‘We once again want to thank all those impacted by this incident for their support as we worked to achieve a peaceful resolution.

‘We’d also like to thank our fellow emergency service staff and in particular the Horowhenua District Council for their support in assisting with temporary accommodation, food and basic needs for residents displaced by this incident.

‘We know this incident has been very unsettling for residents, particularly those evacuated from their homes and we encourage anyone who needs support as a result of this to contact Victim Support on 0800 842 846.’

Body of deceased man recovered, rāhui in place, Mt Ngāuruhoe

A rāhui is now in place on Mt Ngāuruhoe following the recovery of a deceased man.

A group had been mountain climbing on Mt Ngāuruhoe, when one of them fell into a gully.

Police were notified shortly after 5pm yesterday by Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand after a Personal Locator Beacon activation was received.

Sadly, although quickly located by the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s body was uplifted successfully late this morning in a coordinated effort by Police and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation using a helicopter.

Relieving Response Manage Acting Senior Sergeant Shane McNally would like to thank all of those involved in the recovery efforts last night and this morning.

“While this is a tragic outcome, we are glad we can bring his body home for his loved ones and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

The man’s death has been referred to the coroner.
