Secondary teachers to strike next week after rejecting government pay offer

Secondary teachers strike news

Secondary school teachers will stage a four-day partial strike next week after overwhelmingly rejecting the government’s improved pay offer.

The Post Primary Teachers’ Association confirmed that from Monday to Thursday, teachers will refuse to teach different year levels each day, starting with Years 12 and 13.

Union president Chris Abercrombie told state-funded media the rejection was driven by concerns over inadequate pay rises of 2–2.5 percent over two years, a shortfall of 800 teachers, and a lack of staffing for pastoral care as schools face major curriculum changes.

He said the strike action highlights teachers’ determination to secure fair pay, better conditions, and stronger support for students despite preferring a settled teaching environment.

Teachers agree to 14.5% pay rise

    Education

Education Minister Jan Tinetti has welcomed the news that Post Primary Teachers Association’s (PPTA) members have accepted the Governments offer of a 14.5 percent pay rise.

“The Chris Hipkins Government values teachers, which is why in very tight fiscal conditions we have prioritised improvements to their pay and conditions,” Jan Tinetti said.

“Teachers at the top of their pay scale will have had an increase of $27,000 or 36 percent by the end of next year under this Government, compared to a 10 percent increase under the nine years of the last National Government.

“This is one of the most significant pay increases New Zealand secondary teachers have ever received. Shortly, 30,000 secondary teachers will receive the first of three pay boosts between now and the end of 2024. ”

Another 2 – 2.5% on top of the big payrises that ended last year sounds bloody good to me

  2. Sorry teachers but between Labour and the National coalition govts over $100M of tax payer money that could have been used in schools has been given to the Kiev regime half a world away.

  3. Previously it has been stated that it costs 333k to educate one child. Give that money straight to parents and let them choose the teacher to teach their children. That teacher would be well paid, well resourced and I can guarantee that a full education could be taught in a tenth of the time.
