A well-known sportsman is standing trial in the High Court at Dunedin accused of causing 13 rib fractures to an infant, facing charges of injuring with reckless disregard and assault.
The Crown alleges the defendant squeezed the baby with crushing force while in his care, recklessly causing injury, though not intending harm.
Prosecutors say the mother returned home to find the child distressed, and scans later revealed multiple fractures.
The defence argues there is no evidence of assault, suggesting alternative causes such as vitamin D deficiency or a possible bone disorder, while emphasising the defendant’s cooperation with police.
The trial, before Justice Robert Osborne and a jury, is expected to last up to three weeks.
