Home improvement chain Trade Depot has been forced to apologise after a job listing it posted for a warehouse role in Hamilton, stated that applicants must be able to speak Hindi or Punjabi.
Before it was removed from job site Seek, the post was shared across social media sites, with users asking why those languages would be required for a warehouse job in New Zealand.
The company’s managing director, John Christie, was contacted by Chris Lynch Media for comment. Christie admitted “the wording was wrong and the error was ours. Those languages should have been described as an advantage for this role, not a requirement”. Christie went on to say: “Trade Depot is against discrimination in any form. We hire on people’s skills and attitude. This listing didn’t reflect that,” he said.
The blunder has sparked a review of how the company writes and posts its job ads. Christie told Lynch, “Additional language skills can be a real asset at a branch, and that is what this role was meant to address,” adding that “everyone is welcome at Trade Depot”.
The post raises the question of how such a requirement was approved and published in the first place, suggesting the issue goes beyond a simple drafting mistake and points to a broader trend of employers favouring certain linguistic or cultural groups.
The mistake has brought back into focus a 2018 listing, which was also posted on Seek, from Australian telecommunications company Optus. The listing asked for an “Anglo Saxon” applicant who lived locally for its Neutral Bay offices. Critics at the time told Optus to “have a long hard look at themselves” over the post, which was later removed.

Wow. That says it all about our country doesn’t it. Shame on you trade depot. 👎
Trade Depot: There are other places to shop, without woke managemet and without foreigners serving you with unintelligible and incomprehensible English. I’m getting increasingly averse to dealing with them. We have enough unemployed people here who need a chance.
But hey, India FTA, here we go. The importation of totally foreign cultures, which will not integrate because of increasing numbers/population density and their vastly different and actively differring customs and way of life, is a deliberate threat to New Zealand, undermining our unique way of Kiwi lifestyle, you hear Winnie and accomplices? This will end in tears.
I agree. For work we need our packages handled a certain way or the contents are ruined. The number of times the Indian couriers come in holding the box upside down when it clearly says KEEP FLAT – THIS SIDE UP is unbelievable.
The simple reason is – they CANT READ the simple English instruction.
Why can’t unemployed New Zealanders be driving courier vans???? They seem to be able to drive everywhere else.
I can envisage unemployed bullshiticians driving deliveries.
Or standing in the dole que.
No shame on you National and Labour…..
What do they know that we don’t? Indian Free Trade Agreement anyone? Trade Depot being informed that everyone must now hire as many Indians as possible hence the job description? Shame on Luxon for making NZ an open door for mass migration from India… when NZ is so poor already and has a huge employement problem already… any bets as to where this push for mass migration has come from? Luxon is taking his orders from somewhere else… behind that curtain is where you will see who is really pulling the levers on this country just like what’s happening in Europe with mass migration there…and look at the mess they are in now….
They are only sorry because they got caught.
I remember a kiwi born Indian acquaintance I had who once lamented to me that Auckland was becoming a “little Calcutta” there were so many of them here – and that was 15 years ago.
The NEW ZEALAND LOYAL PARTY has warned about this, so when will the voting public finally WTFU…?

Soon, this is what we’ll be seeing in the streets, with our children targeted for rape, molestations, etc.

Yep, Luxon is a traitor as far as I am concerned…the bigger businesses are being given the heads up… Watched Michael Laws yesterday on the Platform and …he out and out stated that no submissions from the public ever stop a bill from being passed… I really did not like that eh… it simply means we the people do not count…. we have no jobs here yet this FTA will let in all kinds, not just IT nerds… every kind of tradie, even dairy farmers… you name it… open slather… what could NZ possibly gain by this? Make more of us move overseas that’s what… this place is so screwed… I have loved being in this country having come in from the UK with my British husband back in the 90s… WE HAD TO PROVE WE HAD ATTENDED AN ENGLISH SPEAKING SCHOOL FOR 5 YEARS… now they advertise these languages as requirements for a job? What the world is going on here?
Amen to that my friend…..agree with you wholeheartedly.
Why are people shocked? I find these kind of requirements all the time. Not those particular two languages but others definitely yes.
What difference does it make whether it is Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Maori atc?
Yes people’s outrage is very selective… perhaps fueled my MSM or a certain political party’s social media election campaign propaganda?
Dave, u r amongst friends here, it’s a “Speak Easy”.
Nevertheless, for clarity for the people visiting, you ought to name any ‘politifack’ you identify as propaganda.
Yes, sheeple, it comes to that
But, but… English is an official language of New Zealand
https://www.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2026/198/en/latest/#LMS1493982
Lol we’ve been conned… note it is AN official language, not THE official language… big difference in reality.
If you choose a local over an ethnic, you leave yourself open to the race card.
So there we have it in one. The reason for treacherous old Nats dirty fake trade deal, CHEAP LABOUR. Selling out there fellow New Zealanders, so imported labour can take their place on a casual basis and for the minimum wage. On the subject of labour, the so called party of the working person, it would seem, is 100% fine with this. What should all of this tell you, people? That these pricks DON’T REPRESENT YOUR INTERESTS. They may look like you, they may sound like you but they are not like you at all. They are GLOBALISTS and they have sold you to big business. Its that simple.
Exactly. Money hungry self serving globalists who live in posh houses behind security gates
From recent experience, the cultural influence at trade depot goes way deeper than just choice of language.
I was persistently lied to around delivery of items, and weeks after failure to deliver have yet to receive my money back
Lying…well, that IS the cultural influence.
WOW i will think twice before using them that’s for sure. We have bought several items from them, but won’t do again. I don’t like racists. This is New Zealand, not india. You must speak English fluently or you should go back to school – or india. Same goes for any other language. English is the language spoken to do business and be educated and get on in life in this country. Assimilate or GET OUT.
The people that own this company are just as bad as the horticultural people I spoke to a couple of months ago who ONLY an employ Filipinos. They should be forced to employ New Zealanders. What a F**KING DISGRACE. Enriching themselves while screwing their staff AND OUR ECONOMY. 👎
Please name the horticultural people you spoke to. They need to be named and shamed.
Oh I would love to, but a bit too close to home and I would stand to get in trouble with family. The thing that pissed me off more is they weren’t even embarrassed about saying it.
