US President Donald Trump has floated a potential 90-day diesel export ban as US midterms approach and polling shows a majority of Americans are unhappy with the Iran war.
While the measure may ease US domestic pressures in the short run, it would set off a chain reaction worldwide for industries that rely on US diesel exports. Analysts in Australia and the UK warned that it could drive prices up further and lead governments to consider rationing.
European officials said the ban would damage the US’ reputation abroad as a reliable trade partner.
Meanwhile, Iran says it remains ready for diplomacy, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi saying it is “up to President Trump to choose,” while Trump says he expects further talks this week.
