Almost 14,000 patients are facing postponed operations, procedures and appointments this week as New Zealand Nurses Organisation members stage two days of strike action after nearly a year of stalled negotiations with Health NZ.

Health NZ have warned of widespread disruption, with graduate nurse start dates also delayed, though emergency services will remain open.

Nurses say the action is unprecedented and driven by critical concerns over unsafe staffing levels, accusing Health NZ and the government of failing to offer real solutions.

While Health NZ insists it is committed to safe care, union leaders argue staff shortages are leaving patients waiting longer and putting their wellbeing at risk.

More than 36,000 nurses, midwives, health care assistants and other health professionals will walk off the job from 7am to 11pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

  1. This is total disgrace…careless and reckless! If the Nurses would prefer to stand on a picket line rather than do their job, why not find a new occupation and let those who are willing and wanting to do the job get on with it…

If a Specialist requests daily District Nurse visits for wound care and dressing, then who is liable for non continuity of care? Who is liable if the wound now becomes infected due to failing to review and treat? The Nurse who made the decision not to attend?

How do these strikes fit with the Health and Disability Patient Code of Rights or does that no longer apply?

  2. Teachers and now nurses and what are the no hopers tasked with wisely spending our money doing with it? Sending it to Ukraine, amongst other things. Another clown show government.

  3. I remember multitudes of nurses during the COVID Scandemic dancing to hip hop in empty corridors in ghost hospitals. All while receiving full pay. Conversely, this health professional in private practice was hemorrhaging cash at a rate-of-knots.

If you are not happy, resign.

  4. Where were you when your work mates were losing their jobs for not taking the vax ,shame on you all ,if you don’t like it bugger off.

  5. Medical profession took a huge hit to their reputation during covid because of all the lie’s and harm they did. I have no sympathy for them or anyone who pushed the MRNA Gene Therapy labeled a Vaccine.

  6. Is anyone asking the question as to why the nurses are so overworked these days?
Answer – Covid jab side effects. Most of the recipients of the jab have some kind of malady.
Hence our health system is being over-run.

    • And the ones who refused were fired. And probably won’t go back.

And, how much does that jab mandate effect people thinking about a career in health work if they think they may be laid off for refusing in the future?

      You reap what you sow

    • Agree. Aside from direct cause and effect (all conveniently ignored by authority) the economic, societal and developmental damage from subjugation to fascist leadership has caused long term damage. The political parasites deserve drenching in toxins as fair and just retribution for their sins.
