37-year-old Hamilton Uber driver Satwinder Singh was sentenced to seven years and two months in prison for raping a 17-year-old passenger in February 2023 after deliberately turning off his GPS, driving to a side street, locking the doors, reclining her seat, and assaulting her despite her clear protests of “no” and “get off me”.
The court rejected Singh’s trial claim that the encounter was consensual or that the victim had made advances, describing his persistent denial as “trying to lie his way out of it” and noting it compounded the victim’s trauma.
The judge acknowledged Singh’s “distorted view” that New Zealand women are “forward and promiscuous” may stem from his upbringing, but ruled this did not excuse the serious breach of trust expected of ride-share drivers.
She declined a sentencing discount for cultural hardship in prison, applied a 10% reduction for prior good character and background, and highlighted the devastating, life-altering impact on the victim, who now struggles to leave home and feels constant rage and unsafety.
Singh’s name suppression was lifted, though publication of his photo remains temporarily suppressed pending evidence of family mental-health harm.

There needs to be a tougher, longer path, to PR and citizenship. There should also be “good behaviour” clauses, that can see you stripped of citizenship, in say the first 10 years living here, if you commit a serious crime. Immigration needs to toughen up too, with tighter screening and less people allowed in, in the first place.
Guy should be rotting in a cell from now until the day he dies. He will probably be out in less than three for good behavior and do it again. This is just one more reason to never use Uber. Sue Uber for billions.
