Celtic stun Feyenoord in Rotterdam to revive Europa League hopes

Celtic beat Feyenoord away in the Europa League 1-3.

Celtic reignited their Europa League campaign with a dramatic 1–3 comeback victory over Feyenoord in Rotterdam — their first win on Dutch soil since beating Ajax in 2001.

Martin O’Neill’s side delivered a performance full of energy and belief at De Kuip, overturning an early setback to secure a huge European result and end a long run without an away win in continental competition.

Feyenoord struck first after ten minutes when Ayase Ueda finished off a swift move across goal, punishing Celtic after a bright start. But the Hoops refused to panic. Reo Hatate and Yang were constant outlets, stretching the Dutch defence and pushing Celtic higher up the pitch. Their pressure paid off on the half-hour mark when Hatate released Colby Donovan down the line, and Yang arrived at the back post to tap in the equaliser.

Moments later, Celtic needed Kasper Schmeichel, who made a superb stop to deny Ueda a second. That save proved crucial. Before half-time, Daizen Maeda forced a mistake from Feyenoord keeper Timon Wellenreuther, gifting Hatate the chance to calmly slot Celtic into a 1–2 lead and send the travelling fans into full voice.

The second half saw Celtic play with confidence rarely shown earlier this season, dominating the ball as the home crowd grew restless. Feyenoord threatened through Tsuyoshi Watanabe and Sam Steijn, but Callum McGregor’s goal-line clearance and Schmeichel’s sharp reactions kept the hosts at bay.

With ten minutes left, Celtic sealed the result. Donovan surged down the right and his cross eventually broke to Benjamin Nygren, who smashed his shot in off the crossbar to make it 1–3 and send Feyenoord supporters heading for the exits.

The win marks Celtic’s first European away triumph since 2021 and O’Neill’s first on the continent since the club’s run to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. It also breathes life back into their Europa League journey — and delivers a long-awaited victory on Dutch soil after 24 years.
