Amateur Jordan Smith walked away with A$1 million and unexpected bragging rights after outshining some of tennis’s biggest names at the Australian Open’s Million Dollar One Point Slam, an event decided by single-point contests.
The New South Wales state champion said he would have been “happy winning just one point,” but instead thrilled a near-capacity Rod Laver Arena by beating world number two Jannik Sinner and women’s world number four Amanda Anisimova before facing Taiwan’s Joanna Garland in the final, herself a surprise giant-killer of Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios.
Fellow amateur Alec Reverente also made headlines by defeating world number seven Felix Auger-Aliassime, with Reverente later edging Smith in a bonus playoff to win a new car. Played in a light-hearted atmosphere, the format drew genuine interest, with even top-ranked players such as Carlos Alcaraz staying courtside to watch the unlikely finish unfold.
