Breakers opt out of ‘Pride Round’ uniform patch citing teamwide cultural and religious concerns

The New Zealand Breakers have decided not to wear the “rainbow pride progress flag” during next year’s NBL “Pride Round”, saying the entire team agreed to opt out after some players raised cultural and religious objections.

To prevent individuals being singled out, the squad chose a unified stance to either all wear the insignia or none at all.

The club emphasised its support for Pride Round and its commitment to an inclusive, welcoming environment, noting players will still participate in events and celebrations.

The Breakers are only the second NBL team to adopt a full-team opt-out, following the Cairns Taipans in 2023, although the club did wear pride jerseys in previous seasons.
