County cricket in England and Wales will trial expanded player replacement rules this season, allowing teams to fully substitute players not only for injuries but also for illness and significant personal circumstances such as family emergencies or the birth of a child.
The move, driven by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), goes beyond similar trials in other countries and aims to improve player welfare while maintaining competitive integrity.
Replacements must be like-for-like and approved by officials, with medical clearance required for injury or illness and executive approval for life events.
Players replaced for injury or illness will face an eight-day stand-down period, while no such restriction applies to personal circumstances, as the ECB balances flexibility with safeguards against misuse.
