New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr claimed gold in the men’s high jump at the world championships in Tokyo, following teammate Geordie Beamish’s historic steeplechase victory the day before.
Kerr cleared 2.36m to edge South Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo, who took silver with 2.34m after failing at 2.38m, while Czech Jan Stefela won bronze.
In front of 37,000 fans at the National Stadium, Kerr said he had to fight hard for the win, crediting Beamish’s success as motivation.
The victory marked a second world championship gold in as many days for New Zealand, with Kerr calling the competition “very special” and relishing the chance to put on a show for the crowd.
