A consortium led by a Los Angeles-based tech multimillionaire of Pasifika heritage is exploring a proposal to save Moana Pasifika by relocating the Super Rugby franchise to Hawaii, following the appointment of liquidators to the club’s holding company.
The plan is one of several options being considered to secure the team’s future, with Hawaii viewed as an attractive base due to its time zone compatibility with New Zealand and Australia, lack of major professional sports competition, and a planned new stadium in Honolulu.
New Zealand Rugby and government officials are continuing discussions with stakeholders, while potential support from Pacific governments and international funding sources is also being explored. However, significant challenges remain, including travel logistics, airline partnerships, and proving the venture is financially viable through an ongoing feasibility study.
Despite uncertainty over the club’s future, coach Tana Umaga said Moana Pasifika’s cultural legacy and strong support among Pacific communities would endure.
