Kiwi Hamish Kerr wins high jump gold at World Indoor Champs

Hamish Kerr news

27-year-old Christchurch man Hamish Kerr delivered an extraordinary performance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Kerr set a new New Zealand record, matched the Oceania record, and established a world-leading height of 2.36 metres, earning him the gold medal. The achievement not only marked the highlight of Kerr’s athletic career but also contributed to New Zealand’s impressive medal tally at the Championships, equalling the country’s best-ever performance with three medals, a milestone previously reached in 2016 in Portland, Oregon.

Kerr’s path to victory was marked by a series of flawless jumps. He began with a first-time clearance at 2.15 metres and continued his streak without fault, impressing as other competitors struggled. His perfect performance put pressure on his rivals, notably during his jump at 2.28 metres, after which he was assured a medal. Kerr’s victory was secured when he and Shelby McEwen of the USA were the only competitors left, with Kerr ultimately clinching the gold after McEwen’s gamble to surpass him failed.

Not satisfied with just the gold, Kerr aimed higher and succeeded in clearing 2.36 metres, a height that not only broke his national record but also equaled the Oceania record.

Looking ahead, Kerr sees his performance as a solid foundation for the year, with his sights set on competing in Paris, aware of the challenges and pressures that await.
