Penrith Panthers opened their 2026 campaign with a clinical 0-26 shutout of reigning premiers Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium, avenging last season’s preliminary final defeat with a disciplined and composed display.
In front of more than 45,000 home supporters, Brisbane struggled badly with ball control and discipline, committing 18 errors, conceding eight penalties and completing just 22 of 36 sets, allowing Penrith to dominate field position throughout the contest.
The Panthers crossed for four tries, with winger Tom Jenkins scoring twice, including a late intercept after Reece Walsh threw a costly pass under pressure.
Veteran halfback Ben Hunt, playing his 356th NRL match to move past Darren Lockyer on the all-time appearances list, admitted Brisbane were well below standard and said the side had significant lessons to absorb after a flat opening-night performance.
