The Black Caps have gone down in a 42-run defeat at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Pakistan set a relatively modest target of 135 runs. It seemed the kiwis might reach the total with ease, but a rapid loss of wickets led to their downfall, ending their innings at 92 runs in 17 overs.
Pakistan’s defense of their total of 134/8 was remarkable, marking the lowest successful defense in a men’s T20 match on New Zealand soil. The previous record was 156/6, set by Australia in 2021. Additionally, it was only the second instance of New Zealand being dismissed for less than 100 runs in a T20 match at home.
Iftikhar Ahmed played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s victory, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs and earning the player of the match award. After the match he attributed his success to reading the pitch conditions and bowling accordingly. Mohammad Nawaz and Usama Mir also chipped in, each taking two wickets.
The Black Caps won the five-match series 4-1.
