‘Picasso of our game’: Forest and Scotland great John Robertson dies aged 72

John Robertson, the former Scotland international and Nottingham Forest winger immortalised by manager Brian Clough as “a Picasso of our game”, has died at the age of 72.

Best remembered for scoring the winning goal as Forest defended their European Cup in 1980 and for his decisive role in the club’s golden era, Robertson also netted memorable goals for Scotland, earned 28 international caps and later enjoyed major success as a coach alongside Martin O’Neill at clubs including Leicester City and Celtic.

Revered for his creativity, two-footed skill and enduring impact, he remains one of the most celebrated figures in Nottingham Forest’s history.
