South Africa’s director of rugby Rassie Erasmus has been hospitalised due to chemical burns caused by a freak accident involving a powerful detergent product.
Erasmus (51) led the Springboks to consecutive Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023. He is not facing any long-term health risks and is expected to make a full recovery.
South African Rugby confirmed that Erasmus is recovering and is expected to return to full-time work within weeks.
Erasmus is likely to resume the head coach role for the Springboks in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup in Australia, following Jacques Nienaber’s departure to Irish club Leinster.
