The launch of the breakaway R360 rugby league has been pushed back from 2026 to 2028, with board member and former England rugby union international Mike Tindall saying more time is needed to meet the franchise’s standards and ensure long-term commercial success.
The proposed competition aims to feature eight men’s and four women’s teams competing in global grand prix-style events, and has been linked to lucrative offers for top rugby union and league players.
However, major unions and the British & Irish Lions have warned that players involved in R360 will be barred from international selection.
Tindall says the board remains committed to delivering a “bold, globally resonant” competition by 2028.
