Rugby Australia has officially scrapped the long-standing ‘Giteau’s Law’, which limited the number of overseas-based players eligible for national selection, giving Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt full freedom to pick players regardless of where they play.
While Schmidt will prioritise domestic players if they are of equal quality, the move is aimed at boosting Australia’s struggling player depth.
The change benefits stars like Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou, who are set to play in Europe.
Originally introduced in 2015 to retain key talent lured by overseas contracts, the law had been gradually relaxed, but is now deemed “redundant” by Rugby Australia.
